just a girl dancing thru life

We understand DC are going ahead with this, that they believe it is the way forward for their company. And maybe a lot of the changes are. I’m actually pretty prepared to wait and see on that. But Harley’s costume? Nuh-uh. And I realise that seems really trivial and trite to a lot of people - they think “it’s just a costume!”. They’re not seeing it from the perspective of her female fans, who overwhelmingly declare a sense of relation to her. Harley has often been spoken of as one of the most accessible characters out there, even though she’s a villain - she’s easy to empathise with. A lot of us see ourselves in her. And in a very sexist world where women are objectified and depicted in impractical, revealing clothing for no point or purpose, Harley wore something cute, pretty and sexy without being uncomfortable - or alienating. And it’s so unique and distinctive. It’s part of her accessibility - that what she wears is easy for anyone to wear. Harley is a huge reason why a lot of women read comics (I would never have picked up a comic had it not been for her) - and we have been calling on The Big Two to recognise us as a significant readership who have a stake in what they produce. When they insult our favourite character by putting her in something ugly, generic, out of character and unimaginative that is purely based on objectification, they’re insulting us - they’re making the statement we don’t matter as readers. So it’s not “just a costume” - that’s just the superficial. In reality it’s about respecting her as a character with a great deal of capital and about respecting us as that audience who is hugely invested in her.

This is a quote from an interview I did for expertcomics.com which is pretty much what I have to say to everyone who says “it’s JUST a costume!”

It’s NOT just a costume. Character designs are critically significant to their image, brand and iconic status - their very engagement with their audience.
